Nepal and Himalayan News and Discussion 2021

An important thread I feel especially with regard to the increasing Chinese influence in Nepal. There has been a lot of recent news with regard to KP Oli increasingly tending to favor the Chinese as a primary trading partner than India. Our new site as well regularly tries to focus on the Nepali diaspora in India which probably number approximately 2 million.

Over the last few years this is an increasing concern especially with regard to strategic security in India as the Indo Nepali border is completely porous. With Nepal’s economy also being in the poor state that it is, many Nepalis have been forced to emigrate to the Middle East for taking up jobs. This is also meant that many conversions of Hindu Nepalis have taken place leading to many of these expatriates coming back and setting up madrassahs on the Indo Nepal Border.

We have published quite a few videos on this and I will continue to post important topics with regard to this important strategic relationship.
Over the last week we have seen reports of Nepali children in some schools where Mandarin has now become compulsory learning.
Not just that, but Nepal has also stopped any celebrations with regard to celebrating the Dalai Lama’s birthday.
KP Oli has also repeatedly asked for resumption of the SAARC Summit which includes Pakistan, instead of BIMSTEC which India has been trying to promote.

Even with all the billions in in aid that we have given Nepal and our overwhelming help in developing the country including infrastructure involving schools and bridges, we can't seem to encourage even people to people contact. Nepalis as we have seen on our social media channels regularly post and detest Indians it seems with a passion. They are regular news reports put out by Chinese constantly stating all India's interference especially with the Madhesi issue in a bid to annex Nepal. China after annexing so many territories now has turned its propaganda machine onto Nepal.
Nepal is vital to India's security with the mountains to some extent deterring the Chinese but also because but also because of Nepal's resources with regard to its mountains, glaciers as well as Hydro resources...Which feed the Indian plains.

Nepali (read Nepaki) newspapers as bankrolled by China are making a field day of this. New stories are abundant about how India is pushing through poisonous vegetables to kill the Nepali population. Simply ridiculous. Every natural calamity or disaster we have been there for them 1st. Tens of billions do we keep pumping into Nepal for its infrastructure projects. Yet it is news stories like this that keep the anti India flame alive. It is time that India make active steps I feel to ally politicly with a grassroots party in Nepal as Chinese have done.

No call yet again has been hip quite hard during this monsoon season. Flash floods as well as overflowing of the Kosi and Gandaki rivers on the Nepali side seem to be causing a lot of damage as well as deaths from flooding. Apparently the Nepali's are blaming India again for Dyke -like structures along the border that seem to be holding the floodwaters in Nepal. Again more anti-India sentiment to deal with.
It seems that India does control some of the barrages and gates in Nepal to release floodwaters. Unfortunately this means that releasing more floodwaters into Bihar. Bihar itself seems to be going through its own crisis. Posted the link below here for further reading.

Modi is currently in Bhutan. Perhaps it is not the right time but I wish that we did this this issue earlier with regard to Bhutan. This issue specifically relates to the refugee issue of Hindu Lhotshampas who have been stateless for decades. Usually numbering around hundred and 10,000 they had been subject to staying as third-class citizens in the nation that strives for gross domestic happiness.

For the Lhotshampas, the last few decades have been nothing but misery for them. Being of the Nepali ethnicity and staying in Bhutan for the last few decades, they were quickly viewed by the Bhutanese monarchy as a threat radically changing the demographics of Bhutan in a few decades. In view of this even Lhotshampas who had appropriate documents and were citizens have his citizenship removed.

I never really understood why but the US granted refugee status to around 96,000 refugee Lhotshampas and most of them have made a home for themselves here in the United States. However, from what I understand that are still approximately 7000 that still live in camps in Bhutan and are mainly elderly as well as children. They are Hindus. In view of this, they should really be granted status under the citizenship amendment act akin to other refugees from Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Modi, I hope, will take up this issue in Bhutan.

India provides Rs 233 crore financial aid to Nepal for infrastructure projects

Read more at:

The amounts of money that we are reporting to Nepal in the last few years is simply staggering. Unfortunately we simply can]t seem to establish more people to people contacts. On our social media sites that we see there is overwhelming anti-India sentiment. Nepal being a boundary state is usually relevant for the amount of resources it contains especially hydroelectric and the mineral deposits from its mountains. It is vital that we seek to try and change the paradigm already overtly under Chinese influence. This includes multiple Chinese websites, and would hope to bring more awareness to the crisis in Nepal on a daily basis.

Jaishankar and his Nepalese counterpart Pradeep Kumar Gyawali here.

The two sides inked a memorandum of understanding on food safety between the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control of Nepal and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India.

Nothing overtly stimulating from Nepal at least with regard to India and this article. Really from the Nepali foreign minister who was giving the interview to the Himalayan times. From my read, Nepal is still playing a very tight rope and equally equal approach.
While they acknowledge India's position in various bilateral talks, they are still apprehensive about any involvement as discussed by India. A good overview however I feel with regard to continuation on collaborative projects including the railways, direct investment with regard to building of infrastructure etc.

What are post below is an excerpt on border pillars between India and Nepal.

‘Nepal-India relations have reached new heights’

https://thehimalayantimes.com/nepal/nep ... w-heights/
However, there are also challenges. The work of maintaining or reconstructing border pillars began in 2014, but much is still left to be done. Moreover, mapping in Susta and Kalapani has not yet been done. In 1989, we had decided to determine Nepal-India border on the basis of fixed-boundary principle. This means we do not determine the border on the basis of existing occupation or holding, but on the basis of maps prepared 150 to 200 years ago. This has resulted in issues of cross-holding in some places. The Joint Working Group on Border Management is working to maintain or reconstruct pillars in places where border determination has been completed. It is also working to resolve issues related to cross-holding and pending issues such as Susta and Kalapani. We have asked the group to expedite work.

A great venture to open up a petroleum pipeline into Nepal. This will vastly improve the amount of trucks carrying fuel into the Himalayan nation. Nepal is almost completely dependent on petroleum products via India. We have often seen how Nepali Air Force helicopters and to even some extent IAF have been dropping huge amounts of natural gasoline cylinders into rural areas for basic necessities such as cooking. Nepal has a real dearth of energy even with huge Hydro power resources. Hopefully this is the first step in trying to keep the lights on for many Nepalis.

India, Nepal jointly inaugurate historic cross-border pipeline in South Asia

https://www.india-aware.com/latest/indi ... outh-asia/
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nepal’s Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli jointly inaugurated the Motihari-Amlekhganj (Nepal) petroleum pipeline through video conferencing on Tuesday. It is the first ever cross border petroleum pipeline in south Asia.

This will ensure environment-friendly supply of petroleum products to Nepal. The total length of the pipeline is 69 kms.

It was built in just little over a year at the cost of Rs 350 crore, the cost entirely borne by the Indian oil Corporation, an Indian Public Sector Undertakings (PSU). Modi called this project “a symbol of our bilateral relations”. He reiterated that it will help enhance security of the region and “substantially cut down on transit costs”.

The New York Times has yet again published an article regarding the embankments on the Indian side that supposedly holds floodwaters back into Nepal which has created a lot of strife among border communities in Nepal. However, watching the news today one can clearly see that these embankments have really not made any dent at all when it comes to flooding it seems across Bihar. Bihar it seems, to be another case of flooding crisis embankments or not.

However, nothing of the flood crisis in Bihar is ever mentioned about on the Nepali side. They really seems, to be some kind of break in communication which foreign agencies are making a hay of with regard to destruction on the Nepali side. Unfortunately, it seems I feel with climate change this is only going to get worse. The more global warming melts more snowfall from the Himalayas which means to increase amounts of flooding in the northern regions especially all across Nepal and northern states of India.

This could also mean massive amounts of floodwater that should already submerging a pretty low lying area of Bangladesh leading to climate refugees. In any case it is foreboding for the horrible situation over the next few years. Interlinking rivers and perhaps drawing away some of this excess floodwater from the north all the way across the Deccan to the South really seems to be needed on a war footing at the earliest.

Nepal decks-up to welcome Chinese president

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/wor ... 549827.cms

Chinese really doing is no favors. Xi Coming to visit Modi in TN and then heading to Nepal to initiate the belt road initiative project which travels through Pok. Not only that but increasing real links between Tibet and Nepal are surely to be discussed. China has long been mining on a vast level on inside of the Himalayas especially in the northeast sector. Would not be surprising by me the start mining on the Nepali side using railways to completely deprive mineral wealth of an already poor Nepali nation.

Saurabh associated with India Aware has landed in Nepal. Over the next couple of days i'm hoping that we can get some insight into what common Nepalis actually feel. What he has actually told me after talking to a few Nepalis is that they are quite unhappy with KP Oli and his bending over backwards to accommodate China.
Chinese have bought over a lot of property in Nepal. Lot of Chinese goods which has meant that any Nepali local trade industry has been effectively killed off. Nepalis admire how Modi has come about and taken hard decisions on a lot of pressing issues and wish for better relations that China.
Over the next couple of days, we hope to get more videos of how Nepalis feel about Indo - Nepal relations.

Great article from Swarajya on what the Chinese Nepal bhai - bhai attitude has really got them. China is just found itself another condom to use in Nepal. Use for satisfaction and then throw away.

Nepal Wanted To ‘Balance’ India By Cosying Up To China. It Got A Big Headache Instead

“Chinese nationals who come to Nepal act like bullies. They are engaged in various types of unlawful activities,” said Ramesh Poudel of Nepal Rashtrawadi Sanchetna Sabha (Nepal Nationalist Awareness Forum).

On 1 September last year, five Chinese nationals were arrested by Kathmandu Metropolitan Police for their involvement in a string of ATM frauds. More than Nepali rupee 12.6 million (INR 78.7 lakh), $10,000, 132 forged debit cards, card cloning devices and other electronic equipment were recovered from them.

Saurabh has also recently returned from Nepal. He has much interesting trivia regarding his trip in Nepal which includes various aspects that we have talked about here many times. Conflict between Kathmandu and Madhesis, how Nepalis truly feel about Indians, the local infrastructure as well as economy of Nepal, also what the Hindu Mahasabha is actually gearing up for in Nepal. Will leave him to comment shortly.

Visit To Nepal Part 1

Hey good morning all, I am sorry I got a little late for posting. I landed in Nepal on Thursday. for Indians, there is no need for the passport you just have to carry your Voter id card that is enough. First thing you have to do after landing, you have to take a Nepali number. Only two telecom companies are working in Nepal and service is also not good. Nepal is similar to India. Transportation is the main problem in Nepal. There is no cab service ONLY private taxis are working those are very costly. I met there with lots of people like taxi drivers, tea sellers, hawkers, etc. In this article, I am going to discuss what common Nepali thinks about India and Nepal's present government. A taxi driver told India and Nepal has the same religion the same culture. both countries have the same language also. The majority of people want to go to India and want to make their careers because in Nepal there is no career for youth. Nepali does not face any problem in India because of no language barrier is there. Even they are treated well in India. he has been in India lots of time so he feels that India has more options for education. he really wants that his son can study in India. He told that the current government of Nepal is not working for its economy. Nepal is a Hindu nation but its prime minister never attends Hindu functions. He always went for the Christian functions that make them feel sad. He is saying the current government is promoting Christian and Muslims to live in Nepal. He added that they should declare Nepal as the Hindu nation because it was the only Former Hindu nation. The government is not working for the youth they are making money for themselves. He wants that If the government will give employment to the youth then they will stop working in other countries and they will work for their nation. He was a big fan of Indian Prime minister. He told Modi Ji has started programs like skill India, digital India that are making Impact in society. Nepal Government can also take advice and help from India to grow the nation he added. in the next article will discuss more Hindu dharma And how Hindu organizations are working in Nepal to make it a Hindu nation again. If you want to visit Nepal and want to know anything drop me a message or put your query here. I will try to answer. thanks !!!!

Nepal trip part 2

Thanks @Muns, Good evening all, Today I am going to discuss about the border security. As we all know that India and Nepal has open borders. There are lots of border issues between India and Nepal. Many times both the governments has tried to talk on the border issues. I am going to discuss my experience of crossing border. We have a long border line with Nepal. It will take around 6 hours to reach Gorakhpur border from Kathmandu by bus. Although I was thinking that there will be lots of security but I was wrong. Around 10 CRPF people are there. They were checking ID card only. They are not even bother to check the bags and the luggage. I think that is why all terrorist groups can easily enter into India. It is good that we have open borders but it is also a security issue for India. Even if you travel to the border line you will find lots of Masjid and Madrsa’s there. It is very threat full for India that anybody can come with weapons and drugs. Even there is no language checking of the Jeeps those are carrying passengers. It is really a security alarming issue that government of India should think about. Will add more into my next post

Thanks

Nepal Part 3

Today I am going to discuss Pashupatinath temple. As we all know Pashupatinath has great value for Hindus and it is very famous as well. Muns has already shared the pictures that you can see above. If you want to go to Pashupatinath it is just 3 Km from Nepal Airport. There is no ticket as such for any person. This temple will not allow you to do Photography inside the temple. It has a very unique identity. It has approx 108 Shivling. There are a lot of small huts for every God. as we know we have a great Importance of AARTI in Hindu Dharma. Morning Aarti will start around 6 and the evening will be at around 6.30. If you are going there don't miss AARTI. you will find Indians there more than Nepalis. On Monday you will get good crowd there because Monday is the day for MAHADEV. outside the temple, you can enjoy Nepali food.

It is increasingly worrying for countries already on the brink such as Nepal with the economy really maintained around tourism. Nepal has had to completely shut down its borders as well. This would really need to all foreign tourists but also trade would get affected. India has stepped in to make whatever it can easier with regard to trade restrictions. Unfortunately the Nepalis have habit of blaming all of their woes upon India. If he does lead to global recession, we are then talking about an already crisis situation in Nepal further deteriorating into mass poverty.

Times do not really bode well I feel for the year ahead in Nepal. India would do well to establish outreach programs from Hindu organizations to those already affected by poverty. It is these kind of situations that evangelical Christians love to exploit.
There are already reports of evangelical organizations trying to exploit the situation in Nepal and the current crisis would indeed embolden their efforts to make headway.

Hey, Muns, you are right on that point Nepal always blames India for his bad condition. They have increased the lockdown period till 7th April. China already played the game with whole world. And no doubt that they will also use the Nepali market or Nepal for this. After this China will try to grow in the Nepali market. Nepal has its economy with tourism only. And for the next six-month tourist are not going to visit. At that time Nepal's economy is going to affect badly. KP Oli as we know he is always in favour of Chin rather than India. Nepal is already 15 years back from India and other countries. and when we come to Hindu organisations, they cant support Nepal government financially because they don't have so many funds.

I think whatever has been done by china it was all planned.

India has a huge Nepali migrant worker force. With the onset of Covid 19, hundreds if not thousands of Nepalis have made the arduous trek back to Nepal. However the Nepali government has denied them entry, prompting human rights concerns. This is now a huge concern for border towns where large numbers of Nepalis are congregating. On the other side of the border, it is also said that Indians are being denied entry back into India. How to believe. It is vital for India to not turn this into another crisis with huge numbers of migrating people stranded at the border. If Nepal won't take back its citizens, then we should make sure that we take care of them I feel on the Indian side of the border with appropriate tent cities for now.

Indians can also be allowed back and quarantined in such tent cities on the border for two weeks, before being allowed to travel to the hometown. Army should take it up and were footing. If not, we could be seeing then a humanitarian crisis developing on our borders again creating a situation where Nepalis, no doubt will use this is another stick to beat us with. Might as well preemptive strike. In other news, some of the Nepali Muslims also it seems attended the Tablighi congregation in Delhi and trying to make their way back as well.

India has opened up the border road from Dharchula to Lipulekh in Uttarakhand. Lipulekh is the pass for which Kailash Mansarovar pilgrims have much more easier access to mount Kailash in Tibet. Unfortunately, this is also claimed by Nepal although we have repeatedly stated that the above road built by the border road organization is well within Indian territory. Nepal looks to the treaty of 1816 Sugauli to really reinforce its right. Unfortunately, while they continue to focus their eyes on India with negative consequences, the Chinese are now claiming that the whole of Everest is within their territory of Tibet. Has led to a few feeble responses from Nepali twitterati online but the only diplomatic response has really been to India.

Unfortunately continues to show how weak the Nepali government has really become under KP Oli. The Chinese have long had their eye on the mineral wealth of the Himalayas. Unfortunate to see that Nepalis being so focused with India that they have completely ignored Chinese sentiments and gameplan all along their northern border.

India’s army chief recently said that Nepal seem to be acting at the “behest of someone else”. If this is so then China now has two proxies by which to attack India in both Nepal as well as Pakistan. The pass at Lipulekh lies solidly within India’s territory. Unfortunate that Nepalis should go against their own Hindu brethren and support the Chinese on this agenda. Really goes to show the desperation that Nepalis feel with regard to trying to improve their broken /staving economic situation. They would rather side with the communist devil with a history of outright massacre of Tibetans as well as occupying the country and eliminating their culture.

Perhaps it is way beyond time, that India really start to establish some form of political identity in Nepal favorable to the BJP as well as possibly even starting the seed of thought that Nepal and Nepalis may do well under the Republic of India. They would avail of all economic benefits as to Indians and with our infrastructure would be able to rapidly lift the cost of living for all Nepalis within a short space of time.

China has long had territorial designs for Nepal. Most recently they have even started to claim that Mount Everest lies completely in Chinese territory to almost a pin drop silence within Nepali circles. Nepalis should quickly recognize the valuable opportunities that joining as a union territory under the Republic would offer them. At the very least it would stop the excessive poverty that one sees in vast swaths across regions of Nepal.
