Also, saw madras cafe on netflix this weekend, very nice movie, though JA was overacting in certain places, esp where he was a crying hero, otherwise he was very good and the narration was good too. would recommend to anyone who hasnt followed the LTTE issue much. One critical piece that I found missing was why india entered into the mess, esp the sri lankan permission to teh pakis to refuel

Recently revisited one of my favourite movies: Manichitrathazhu (Malayalam). The original of the Chandramukhi (Tamil), Bhool bhulaya (hindi), and their Telugu and Kannada cousins and streets ahead of all of them.

Next time an Indian takes pride in Free n Fair elections, Newton will be thrown on the face.

It's the Slumdog genre of psyops.

We should be able to counter this with
1. no democracy is perfect,
2. the GB's & DT election should be a stark reminder
3. This represents a small portion and story and the fact that we can make such stories tells volumes about our democracy, can such movie be made in China? or about corruption in army or '71 in in pakistan?

3. I liked "Ghazi". Enjoyed it more than that Tom Clancy book
4. I liked "Pink"
5. I watched 5 minutes of "Lipstick under my burqa" and stopped

My opinion on Newton is that it is just a movie. It has to survive attacks from all political colours AND naxalites and still break even - so it just tippy toes over issues. Nothing really serious about it.

I don't want to digress but I have a nephew who was posted in a company in the heart of Naxal country. One day ( a holiday) Naxals had warned that the (private) minerals plant should be shut down. The boss ordered that it should continue to work. Sure enough Naxas turned up threateningly and asked the people st start shutting the plant down - and that was commenced. soon however, the boss arrived - asked for the plant to be restarted and took the Naxals aside and reached some deal with them. Work went on then.

Saw "Ramleela" - malayalam movie. A little pro-left but still shows the underbelly of politics. Liked it.

shiv, thats common across the naxal areas of erst while AP. They are glorified gundas under the red flag garb. It was the same when Veerappan was operating in the TN/KA border. There were so many hard working, genuine business men who had to pay him and get the rough end of the rifle from the cops/STF.

Yup, Bajwa bro.. the movie was shown on Zee channel on TV a few days back.

I saw "Toilet.." in the theatre. I liked it. Generally, if you agree with Modi's priority of "Pahele shauchalay, Phir devalaya" (First build toilets, then temples), you'd like it. Otherwise, I can see some folks taking offence at a few things in the film (they'll most likely not agree with Modi's statement as well).

After having missed 99% of good movies for 40 years I am on a movie watching binge now. Please post names of good movies in the last 40 years (I'm serious) so I can choose. I have forgotten their names...

I assume you can understand telugu as it's similar to kannada, I'd recommend K Viswanath movies such as Sankarabharanam. All indic movies.

Thanks for the suggestions. In general I am beginning to find that newer Indian movies are moving well out of the old mold and some are very good.

Not sure if you can follow malloo saar but I'd start there for good indian movies. Head and shoulders above any of the crap dished out by other movie dens. Newer low budget stuff from tamil are also quite good.

Shiv ji!! If you have not watched Jane bhi do yaaro the most sarcastic movie of all time then you have not seen anything. Its director Kundan Shah passed away couple of days ago. Here is the full movie!

Anybody seen Shivay (Devgun)? it is now on Netflix.
