Profile in the earlier forum showed I had max posts in physical fitness dhaga to my surprise...so starting here :).

Raja, continuing the kilimanjaro trip talk - I didn't have the portapoty carrying help but they do have pit toilets built at various camps. Not the best but kept reasonably clean. For the fancy get up with higher cost - cost ranges from down down of $1200/300 (which requires much haggling) to 3500 - there has to be some upgrades - better tents, food and toilet paraphernalia. Though one can look at it positively too. These guys probably are carrying out the poop from the mountain -either back down or into those pits rather than leaving it along the slopes.

This is a fav subject of mine. When we hike obviously a TP tent is set up for in all camps. Our guys dig the hole and they will close it when we move. There are some basic rules on where you can dig a hole and where you should not. India hikes got in to a controversy some years back. Some of us do free style, rather than sitting inside a flimsy tent. One of the perks is you can see the mountains in moonlight when you are squatting to do your business. In India, we don't have the capability to bring everything back, but sooner or later we will get there, with hoardes of people visiting these far off places like never before.

Other than drinking lot of water and eating carrots, any other natural remedy to improve aging eyes/vision? Or any suggestions for vitamin or supplements?

Shandaliya,

A number of my friends have told me they stopped wearing glasses after a few months of regularly doing pranayaam every morning.

Also, try eating papaya every day.

Any doctors for muscles, bone injuries here ? I have some moderate to severe pain in my achilles tendon (?) on both feet since more than 2 years. I have been to 1 physiotherapist and 3 doctors and neither helped much. Physio did sessions with heat therapy and some exercises for a month and doctors prescribed some painkillers and medicine like Tendocare.
Did cold pack, hot packs as they suggested and some exercises, but not regularly.
But the pain still persists. I walk a lot in my line of work, love trekking and exercising in gym. But this pain is making it difficult even to walk normally. It is worse once I start walking after I am sitting or lying down for some time but then goes away as I walk for 5-6 minutes.

I have good hiking shoes with foamy inserts which I normally wear.
Earlier my uric acid levels were .1 (10.1 or nearby) level more than normal and got lower with some medicine.

What kind of doctor should I see now or anything else for that matter ? ANy good doctors in Delhi ?

FIL came 2nd in his age group again - 1st one was few weeks ago at a 10K where he came 771/3500 runners overall and 2nd in his age group (65-69). Yesterday he came 2nd in a 5K in the 60-69 age group. Hardy SDRE hillmen can beat the pants off TFPE goras any time.

2 years of pain is not a small thing.
have you tried various types of shoes over this time or always sticking to your hiking shoes and leather shoes day to day ?

shoes with less of heel-to-toe drop tend to put more stress on the achhilles tendon and back of the calf. a lot of ultra run oriented shoes and running sandals are like that, flat and need getting used to. also the comverse type canvas keds that gen-next likes to wear...heavy and flat.

for average people a good 10-12mm of drop eases the pressure in the back. most Nike/adidas/puma/asics shoe has that. i suggest you try a pair of sneakers if not already.

take a look at these and do some of them routinely like every day.

Most of my shoes for daily use (sneakers and hkiing shoes) are cushioned and have ankle support. Not using sandals and dress shoes with less support anymore. That's what doctors recommended.
Had done exercises and physio therapy. These were only marginally effective.

I know that yoga is good for health but how'll it help tendon injury ?

I had a pretty bad ankle injury from a twist that left me unable to run properly for close to 2 years. Couldn't run 100m without a swollen ankle and nothing short of surgery would fix it. I just let it be and it healed up after nearly 3 years. Now I can run 10ks without pain as long as I keep it stable and dont do anything crazy.

Today's pre-work 5 mile run in the nearby hills - onlee in the Bay Area

One of the mine entrances

Entering the mine

100 ft in, this is what it looks like with a flash light which I doubt miners had back in the days
Image

Some additional illumination reveals the mine shaft going down

Light at the end of the tunnel, literally

One of the mining camps where the Cornish miners used to stay during the days of the Gold Rush

A collapsed mine shaft entrance along the way

While running up a climb to the mine, I noticed deer suddenly running down a slope and congregating in a bunch on the trail. They had their heads perked up and kept nervously looking up the slope and formed a tight group. Most likely a mountain lion was stalking them. Cat must have been an ex-gobermint PSU employee given its late riser habits. Hard to make out any cat against the dung brown grass so I didn't wait too long and continued up.
Image

Other deer started rapidly downhill skiing like NLI kamandus to join the group

You need to see a good podiatrist - foot doctor. It is a separate specialty here in the US. I am sure there will be somebody in India too. Are you sure it is not plantar fascitis? Have you gained weight? Did you have medications like Cipro/Levofloxaxin that can cause Achilles injury?

As SIngha ji has pointed out, proper foot wear is of paramount importance. You may need to try sneakers with different amounts of cushioning and heel height.

Seems like there are some podiatrists in the city but quite far. Will check for appointment.

No weight gain or medications or any other health issues which require treatment. I used treadmill , cross trainers and exercised very regulalrly since last 4-5 years . Also a fair bit of hiking.

Pain is not on bottom of heel but above it.

Just started doing hot packs followed by little massage before bed. Pain seems less after waking up in morning. But is bad after standing and walking for some time which is unavoidable.

Sitting cross legged in bed reading newspaper I suddenly realised a sensation that has occurred many times in the past and amazes me.
Googling it I got no answers but someone’s else has also complained about the exact same experience & sitting posture which I quote below

When I sit in the below mention position, I can see my whole body sway with the heartbeat,Very visible
Does it happen to others too. And why

http://www.healthboards.com/boards/open ... tbeat.html
sit cross-legged, elbows on my knees, and my hands under my chin as if to support my head, and just relax, my entire body will start to bob up and down in accordance with my heart beat. I can sort of feel my heart beating in my chest, but as I sit here and bounce,...and it's very visible

Do you ever feel as if the scene in front of you, i.e. your visual field is 'pulsating' slightly? Also, do you feel your heartbeat, almost hearing it at as you lie in bed on your stomach with your head turned to one side so that your ear rests on the pillow? When you run or exercise, do you feel the pulse in your groin area like 'pistol shots'?

If so, you have a hyperdynamic circulation and may have a regurgitant valve, either aortic or more commonly mitral. Another way to test for this is to place one knee on another so that the back of the upper knee is fitting snugly over the one beneath. Then watch to see if the foot of your upper leg moves with your pulse. The movement may be ever so slight. This can happen to most normal people but it is exaggerated in those with a regurgitant heart valve and certain other conditions.

One more thing is that you may find your pulses are all very easily palpable, especially those that others find hard to locate, like the 'dorsalis pedis' which is a small artery running on the upper surface of your food, from the front of the ankle, the best place to palpate it is over the bony prominence on the foot just below where your shoe laces would be.

is it true that pretty much all humans have some amt of heart valve leakage ? ie if someone does a proper ultrasound scan something or other will always come up?

a slightly enlarged prostate was found in stomach organ annual ultrasound this year Jan. it was not found in 2016 Jan. I went to my FILs surgeon cum urinary doc @ fortis and he said not to worry but to take a PSA test, which came back negative. my wife's maternal uncle one of them was found with prostate cancer he is around 65...in apollo chennai cancer center they implanted a 3d scan planned grid of radioactive 'rice grains' into the prostate which releases radioactivity over time , he comes back every year for checkup.

though i run marathons, my hypothyroid means i tend to put on weight quickly from any indisciplined eating and very hard to lose weight. so while my optimal should be 77kg, i am always around 83-85 in recent years. and my vo2 max is not great so i find it hard to run fast, and if i start making a sustained attempt at fast short runs my legs and hips get minor injury whose downtime i cannot afford in marathon train cycles of 16-20 weeks. so i run slow. and i use a heart rate monitor belt paired to my garmin and keep the HR below 160 on the long runs, esp in the first half. the body anyway lets know when its not able to cope and run becomes a walk and quickly attempting to run again shoots up the HR to 180...in these situations i find drinking some gatorade, a bit of fruit and walking quietly for around 10 mins makes things functional again and one can start jogging very slowly....perhaps a deficit of water and overflow of lactic acid needs time to clear up.

by avoiding office lunch and taking tiffin home i am starting another attempt week2 now of reducing to 77 which really helps over long distances like FM. its easier to get lighter than to develop a more powerful engine. the elites at that distance are usually 5'5" , 60kg paired to a massive but light F135-mki geared turbofan....fuel sipping supercruise mode is the default...with bursts of blue flame cone afterburner use for breakaways. the elite african women esp the ethiopians are barely 5' but i have seen them up close...they are scary fast like gazelles, super graceful.
